Rachael Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Distribution is when a company or individual is responsible for releasing a film to the public. They distribute it using posters and trailers so that they can get there film seen.

You can distribute your film like these people. They got there film promoted by showing it a festival in which important people attended.

Major company
Last house on the left:

This trailer is of Last house on the left. It grabs the audience's attention in many ways. such as they use a shot that say 'murderous Rampage'. This creates fear and makes the viewer feel frightened. It also shows unexpected events. The title "Last house on the left" clearly shows. About it being a dead end, It gives a mystery and get the audience thinking. They use sayings through out the clip such as 'it was a brutal crime',' it was a place to hide','if someone you loved', ' how far would you go?'. They are asking rhetorical questions to get the audience thinking.  Also, in this trailer it used a lot of camera shots and angles such as close ups of there reactions on there faces. and also long shots of the surroundings which which gives a sense of professionalism which will interest the audience to go and watch this film.

The last house on the left poster:

This poster uses a black background to show emptiness and by using white and red font it makes it stand out. The font used shows the genre of the film and also shows that it is a horror film. They use a picture of the house underneath the name of the film and put it in a black and white image with a white glow around it to make it stand out.
They use the line 'IF BAD PEOPLE HURT SOMEONE YOU LOVE, HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO HURT THEM BACK?'. This Slogan is also used in the trailer of the film.

Independent distubuture:
Hammer Productions:

Hammer Productions have produced big named films such as; Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy. Hammer productions also did physciolgical thrillers, which is our genre for our film.
In the 1950's Hammer productions establishing important distribution rights with American companies. They then joined with Robert Lippert Productions. The partnership was important because it allowed Hammer the rights to use fading but recognizable American stars in their British productions making them more accessible to the American audience.

This is the trailer for The Woman in Black. You can tell from the mise-en-scene the film is set in the olden days and we can see this from the costumes and the style of the house which is very dark, wooden and run down which instantly gives it a scary feel. The trailer show scariness as children are featured in a lot of horror films as they are seen to be very innocent so it makes it unusual for them to be in a horror genre so it draws the audience into watching the film. Also horror films use nursery rhymes and give them an airy effect to create a mysterious and creepy effect. In this trailer they use dirty, run down children's dolls which is another object that is related to horror genre as they have been seen as 'real and living'. Also they use Daniel Radcliffe's name as he is a main star and has featured in the most famous children's film Harry potter.

The women in black poster:
This is the poster for The Woman in Black. This poster  uses simple colour's such as grey and white to add effect. They have created two faces one is of the man who is covering half of the frame so you can see detail in his eyes. Then there is the womans face behind him which is faded and very dull and shadowed is obviously 'the woman in black'. In this poster the threat is stood behind the victim looking at him. The title of the film is lit up and stands out from the background which draws the audiences the attention to it. Another feature of this poster is the writing 'do you believe in ghosts?' which attracts the audience as it is getting the audience involved and making them answer the question.

Another independent company is Black and Blue Films:

Black and Blue films have produced successful films such as;  Dead Cert, Devil’s Playground and Just For The Record. they focus on horror, crime and comedy genres, the company has become a trusted partner for distributors and financiers, and have partnered with leading independent distributor 4DigitalMedia.

This picture is taken from the film dracula by Hammer productions.

This is a string of images from the film Devil's Playground.

The two films are different becuase the dracula filmed was produced in 1958 therefore the film is in black and white and does not use modern technology, where as the Devil's Playground was produced in 2010. Dracula is a vampire film and uses conventional things such as; sucking blood, the vampire teeth, black cloaks. Where as Devil's playground is a zombie film and uses modern technology to create the zombies and also use skilled makeup to create the looks.

Way

I could promote my film at the film festivals. This is a really effective way to distribute a film because it is open to the public to watch screenings of many different films, which would hopefully result in more and more people talking about the films shown to get more people to come and watch it. Film festivals are mainly associated Independent films as they do not have as much publicity as Major films.

The video shows a Film Festival in Nottingham called Bang!

Distribute my film.

I could distribute my film using posters and trailers. By using posters everybody can see the poster for my film as they can be shown in many different public places so i feel this is a very good way for distributing my film. The trailer and be put on youtube which can be accessed by the entire world. If the film trailer gets enough views more people will watch it also on youtube you can share it on other online sites for other people to see such as Facebook and Twitter. I could also distribute my film on the radio, on popular stations such as Capital FM and Radio 1. As people in the morning listen to the radio so a lot of people would hear about it.
Another way i could distribute my film is through newspapers and magazines. This could also be a successful way to promote my film to both the younger and older generations because younger people would be very likely to read magazines and perhaps some newspapers.

People have distributed there films via the college youtube site.
You can also create a short horror film and add it onto youtube to get views.
