Evaluation Rachael Biggs

This is my final evaluation that I have done. I go through the making of the first film, this is where I learned about contiunity editing. In the first filming my strengths where clear that I could direct and work the camera well, such as white balancing. But my weaknesses from the start of the filming was not good, the camera angle was not aimed right, the camera was shaky but the tripod was used. The shots where shot in college so therefore in the background there is background noise. The rule of thirds did not apply in the very first shoot. The shooting for the final film went well. My strengths for the final filming was I could direct well which i carried through from the very first filming. The other strengths was I could edit the work and add effects such as the zoom out of the title. I decided on the mise-en-scene for the filming, The dark room was used and worked effectively I think that the room and lighting could be a little lighter but we put the character in a white mask so i think this works effectively. In this video I go through the film that.

WARNING! On this I have made an error but cannot change it as it will not let me, but where the random clip of the tripod goes its not ment to go there it is ment to be after i have spoke about continuity. On imovie it is fine and I have uploaded it to blogger and it has changed it.

Question 3

The sample poster will show a key image the name of the film company. The film makers made a sample poster just to advertise the film, then they release the final poster which says when its been released in the cinema. The sample posters are just to get the film known so that people will go watch the film, another way to promote the film will be by trailers. The trailer for amityville horror has released the trailer so it attaracts the audience, the trailer contains parts of the most intrestings bits of the film so that the audience gets drawn in. Lines are used such as 'based on a true story' so it makes you want to watch it even more. The trailers are a great way to promote your film and so if we wanted to do this we could put the trailer on youtube to get views.

This is our film poster that we have created, this has been made by photoshop, as you can see we created the light and then took an image from the film and made it more transparent this gives a great effect. another image from the clip has been taken and that is of the guy, We have made the character also transparent and then added a black and white effect to make it fit more with the genre. We went with the traditional poster and made the writing white and big so that is clear to see and then a slogon has been used saying 'dont look into the light' this is to draw people in and watch the film. Credits are placed at the bottom of the poster with the film website and companys logo. The certificate is also on the bottom to clarify the age.

Audience Reviews

question 3 production company logo

We have used this image and edited it to create a background for our Logo. We chose it because it shows shadow and light which is represented in our film. We used the back background as it shows the genre of horror and then the images and patterns around it show physiological and mystery which is the sub-genre of our film. We also added text with our companies name on: Storm Productions. We used the font as it also stands out which is want we want in our opening titles.

This is our finished company logo and it will represent our film well.

These logos are off different companys that produced films. As you can see most of the writing is in the middle and is in bold white writing. The thing that the logos all have in common is they have sky in the pictures. Paramount shows you the mountain and then the nice red setting sky, Warner Bros use a nice blue with a light purple clouding in the back. 20th century fox use a the red setting sky in the background. The image in the middle represents the statue of liberty and then the clouds are editing in going from dark to a bright yellow. Dream works use the moon and then the clouds with a little character with a fishing rode sat on the moon. universal use the sky and the stars. All of these logos are well known and you can automatically know what the company is as soon as you see the background. I have tried to create the same thing but giving it a horror like feel. The white in the logo are representing the clouds but by giving them an effect and adding darker colours it fits in with the genre.

Rachael evaluation question 4&5

Who would be the audience for your media product?

How did you attract/address your audience?

- Paranormal Activity
They have a put a certificate of 15 on this film. From the user ratings you can see that the most people that watch paranormal acticity are males under 18.

- The Silence of the Lambs

The silence of the lambs have a certificate of 18. From the user ratings you can see that under 18's are the most people to watch the film. Due to the user ratings I think the certifcate should be go to a 15 as there the people that have voted the most. But the contents that is in the film should be aimed at a 18 only.

- black swan
The Black Swan has a certificate of 15. The most people that have voted for the Black Swan is males under 18. So they have targeted this film correctly and are apealing to the correct audience.

- The Machinist 15.
The machinist has a certificate of a 15. From the user ratings you can see that there is a variery in audience;  females ages 18-29, females under 18, males under 18 and aged under 18 all have the same votes. So from looking at the ratings you can see that the target audience goes from under 18- 29.

- Memento
The Memento has a certificate of a 15. The user ratings show you that people aged under 18 are viewing the film the most. Which means the film is getting the target audience correct and is appealing to the right people.

We have decided to go with the target audience of 15 as it is only
Suitable for 15 years and over
No one younger than 15 may see a‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work. As we have chosen a 15 it means that The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour. There cannot be any promottion or encourage drug misuse, thereofore drugs are not aloud to be used. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised. Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised. There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘shit’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable. Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Violence may be used but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification. In our film we have not gone over any of the 15 certificate rules and regulations, I think I 12 is to young to certifcate it at but an 18 is too high as there is no violite content or sexual relations, therefore rating our film 15 is perfect.

The film represents issues such as age and gender as we have not gone with the conventions of the typical female being the one in danger. It is important to know who the audience for your film is as then you can produce the film to fit around your audience and have things in it that relate to the target audience.   The target research is to show the target audience i am trying to achieve and the target audience is aimed at teenagers ages 15-19. We have chosen this as the most people to watch the films are this aged. To aim it at the percific audience then we have to create an effect that will make them want to watch it. The story line and opening titles have to be good to make them watch on.

Rachael Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Distribution is when a company or individual is responsible for releasing a film to the public. They distribute it using posters and trailers so that they can get there film seen.

You can distribute your film like these people. They got there film promoted by showing it a festival in which important people attended.

Major company
Last house on the left:

This trailer is of Last house on the left. It grabs the audience's attention in many ways. such as they use a shot that say 'murderous Rampage'. This creates fear and makes the viewer feel frightened. It also shows unexpected events. The title "Last house on the left" clearly shows. About it being a dead end, It gives a mystery and get the audience thinking. They use sayings through out the clip such as 'it was a brutal crime',' it was a place to hide','if someone you loved', ' how far would you go?'. They are asking rhetorical questions to get the audience thinking.  Also, in this trailer it used a lot of camera shots and angles such as close ups of there reactions on there faces. and also long shots of the surroundings which which gives a sense of professionalism which will interest the audience to go and watch this film.

The last house on the left poster:

This poster uses a black background to show emptiness and by using white and red font it makes it stand out. The font used shows the genre of the film and also shows that it is a horror film. They use a picture of the house underneath the name of the film and put it in a black and white image with a white glow around it to make it stand out.
They use the line 'IF BAD PEOPLE HURT SOMEONE YOU LOVE, HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO HURT THEM BACK?'. This Slogan is also used in the trailer of the film.

Independent distubuture:
Hammer Productions:

Hammer Productions have produced big named films such as; Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy. Hammer productions also did physciolgical thrillers, which is our genre for our film.
In the 1950's Hammer productions establishing important distribution rights with American companies. They then joined with Robert Lippert Productions. The partnership was important because it allowed Hammer the rights to use fading but recognizable American stars in their British productions making them more accessible to the American audience.

This is the trailer for The Woman in Black. You can tell from the mise-en-scene the film is set in the olden days and we can see this from the costumes and the style of the house which is very dark, wooden and run down which instantly gives it a scary feel. The trailer show scariness as children are featured in a lot of horror films as they are seen to be very innocent so it makes it unusual for them to be in a horror genre so it draws the audience into watching the film. Also horror films use nursery rhymes and give them an airy effect to create a mysterious and creepy effect. In this trailer they use dirty, run down children's dolls which is another object that is related to horror genre as they have been seen as 'real and living'. Also they use Daniel Radcliffe's name as he is a main star and has featured in the most famous children's film Harry potter.

The women in black poster:
This is the poster for The Woman in Black. This poster  uses simple colour's such as grey and white to add effect. They have created two faces one is of the man who is covering half of the frame so you can see detail in his eyes. Then there is the womans face behind him which is faded and very dull and shadowed is obviously 'the woman in black'. In this poster the threat is stood behind the victim looking at him. The title of the film is lit up and stands out from the background which draws the audiences the attention to it. Another feature of this poster is the writing 'do you believe in ghosts?' which attracts the audience as it is getting the audience involved and making them answer the question.

Another independent company is Black and Blue Films:

Black and Blue films have produced successful films such as;  Dead Cert, Devil’s Playground and Just For The Record. they focus on horror, crime and comedy genres, the company has become a trusted partner for distributors and financiers, and have partnered with leading independent distributor 4DigitalMedia.

This picture is taken from the film dracula by Hammer productions.

This is a string of images from the film Devil's Playground.

The two films are different becuase the dracula filmed was produced in 1958 therefore the film is in black and white and does not use modern technology, where as the Devil's Playground was produced in 2010. Dracula is a vampire film and uses conventional things such as; sucking blood, the vampire teeth, black cloaks. Where as Devil's playground is a zombie film and uses modern technology to create the zombies and also use skilled makeup to create the looks.

Way

I could promote my film at the film festivals. This is a really effective way to distribute a film because it is open to the public to watch screenings of many different films, which would hopefully result in more and more people talking about the films shown to get more people to come and watch it. Film festivals are mainly associated Independent films as they do not have as much publicity as Major films.

The video shows a Film Festival in Nottingham called Bang!

Distribute my film.

I could distribute my film using posters and trailers. By using posters everybody can see the poster for my film as they can be shown in many different public places so i feel this is a very good way for distributing my film. The trailer and be put on youtube which can be accessed by the entire world. If the film trailer gets enough views more people will watch it also on youtube you can share it on other online sites for other people to see such as Facebook and Twitter. I could also distribute my film on the radio, on popular stations such as Capital FM and Radio 1. As people in the morning listen to the radio so a lot of people would hear about it.
Another way i could distribute my film is through newspapers and magazines. This could also be a successful way to promote my film to both the younger and older generations because younger people would be very likely to read magazines and perhaps some newspapers.

People have distributed there films via the college youtube site.
You can also create a short horror film and add it onto youtube to get views.

Create a sample film poster for your film using key still images, fonts and certificates (photoshop)

Advertisement campaign - detail your advertising campaign detailing the following, sample poster (use still from film) where poster will appear, trailer release (which films would it proceed) post trailers that are similar

Compare and contrast your production company logo with a competitor posting images and video of the different logos

Rachael Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representations work on the basis of stereotypes which is what people expect or believe to see. To understand representation in films which would relate to my horror film, it is useful to look at other films relating to my film and see how they deal with particular representations and stereotypes. Stereotypes reduce a wide range of differences in people to simplistic categorization. They transform assumptions about particular groups of people into "realities". They can be used to justify the position of those in power.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TC9bKyDB5Y

At first the female character is the one that is vunerable, which is stereotypical of a female, and the male should be the one too protect her. In the first film the male character is your typical hero, trying to protect his girlfriend from the spirit. But as the film progresses the tables turn and the female character is the more dominant character as she has more screen time and is the one that attacks the male character. They female character challenges the stereotype of a female and as this is a horror film, it plays with the fact she is the dominant character and can attack anyone.

In this film it plays with age, as it shows that the victims are the child and the dog. They are the most venerable in this situation and they are the character's which will hit the audience the most.

How has your planning evidenced your understanding of social groups representation?

We did not go with the sterotype of a horror, as normally the person in the threat out is a women. But we went with a male as he gets possessed therefore I think him being a male works. This image shows the actor in relation to conventions of the make up, as its dark and you can see that we have put a pale base on his face to make it fit the sycological genre and then we have put dark make up around the eyes and then we have made dark cheek bones so they are definde. I reserched a stablishing character and so we tried to use that in our actor.

Discuss your story in relation to conventions of the sub-genre?

Our film is about a guy who is just watching tv, like an every day life, then the electricity trips. We took the casual living room idea from the film 'paranormal activity' as i think it works. A home is known for comfort and safety, therefore by playing with the stereotype of a home we have created the setting so you dont expect anything to happen. The film 'Paranormal activity' is shot in a house, they have played with it well as in there home they play with the pots and pans and make them crash together they make the cupboards open and door undo. We didn't want to use any of them ideas, but paranormal activity use the idea that they have a sella and everything happens down there. We used the idea but made it be a light behind a shed, this makes the audience ask questions and wants them to watch on.

These are my storyboard sheets for our film. These do not follow what we have done but we have took idea from our original ideas. The first storyboard is of the character proccessing pictures. In the first storyboard the character is hanging them up, but during our film he is proccessing them in the trays, this is becuase the setting had no place to hang up the picture i think the storyboard for the title seuqence matches what we have done for our film. The other storyboards show the character going towards the light, this is what we have done in our final film, the only difference is we added the scene where he is watching a film and the electricity goes off. Also on this storyboard it shows the light coming from the curtains, we didnt think that the idea of a light coming from the curtains would be scary, therefore we changed it to behind the shed. I think the disision made was a good one and has worked well.

Compare one sequence from your film that establishes social group.

These two shots are taken from our film .I have chosen these as they establish the social group of teenagers. They show that the regular teenage life just watching a film in there living room when all of a sudden the electricity goes. We have targeted the teenagers as we think they will be the perfect audience and from doing reserch most teenagers ages 15-19 watch phycological horrors. By using the scene of the young boy, it related to the audience, one thing which is notisable in the film is a green light flashing when the lights go off, this is the x-box controller light. This prop relates to teenagers as most teenagers play on the x-box, so as soon as they see the green flashing light they automatically know what it is. We have also taken a well known film which stars leonardo dicaprio to relate to the target audience.

The feedback from the audience shows that they didnt know what audience we was targeting at. Maybe it was not clear for them but i think we have represented it well. We have added things into the film to relate to the target audience such as; x-box light, film, actor the same age and set in a house. But if they have put down that they do not know what the target audience is, I think we needed to represent it better. To do this we could of added more thrilling parts, and made the music more faster to relate to other genres of music that teenagers listen to.

Rachael evaluation question 1

How does the image use and develop or challenge existing conventions from your sub-genre?

I have chosen the images as inspiration for our own psychological film. The images represent different conventions from the psychological film sub-genre.

Logo from an excising film

This is the Paramount logo from an existing film. It is shown before the film as this is a recognizable company and logo.  The colors show the coldness, by using the mountains and eeriness of the clouds. They use the white font as it is clear to see. The writing is clear and bold mirroring the films intentions.

This logo from the Lionsgate company is the red, fiery clouded black ground which gives a mysterious and spooky feel which portrays horror. This logo uses clear font which will stand out when you are watching it. Lionsgate has produced films such as twilight, as twilight is about vampires i think this logo is a great way to portray the genre of the film.

Logo from our film
This is my production logo for my film. I feel this logo uses the conventions from my sub genre as it is very dark and gloomy. I have created this image by changing the exposure so that the image is a dark colour so that you get the feeling that the film is scary. This image is also very mysterious just like our film as we use the idea of the light. The titles are in the middle in bold just like the lions gate logo, this makes the name stand out

Titles from an existing film

This is the opening titles to the film Seven. It develops the conventions of the story as it opens with clips of the film which creates suspense. The writing of the titles is blurred which is illustrating the type of film it is. They also have words such as; Lust, envy, greed, sloth, wrath and pride which represents what the character is like and maybe the type of mise en scene being used.

Titles image from our film

This is one image we used in our film and its the name of our film. This logo is simple and easy, but still gives the effect of horror plus i created this image by putting the light in the middle as this is the idea of our film. The titles are white just like the ones used in se7en as i think the white writing stands out by using the black background.
Image showing sub- genre

This image is from The Ring. it shows typical conventions from the sub genre of Phychological with mystery. The colours used in this image are black and white showing the white ring light. The white colour gives a cold and airy atmosphere to the film creating the sub genre well.

Own sub-genre shot

This image shows our sub-genre which is phycological as it plays with the audience mind. They ask themselfs questions such as 'why is he getting possessed by the light?' and 'what happens next?' these are the sort of questions that you ask yourself when watching phsycological films. The angle of the camera shot is at a low angle so it is looking up at the character, this is so you can create shadows on the face and so you can see the emotion being portraid.

established character from a film

This is an established character from silence of the lambs. In this picture it represents the look of a crazy man. For our character they are going to be slightly crazy just like this character. Our character will have similar features such as the make up under the eyes, the only difference is our character will be younger. From the mise en scene it shows that he is hiding. This is typical behavior in a horror film representing our sub genre well.

Insert own establishing character
This image is taken from the end of the film when he is possessed you can see that we used the male character just like the one is the silence of the lambs. In the silence of the lambs the male character has dark eyes to show that he is creepy and also his cheek bones are defined by using black make up to make them stand out. We have to tried to use the similar effects by putting dark makeup around the eyes and then putting the black on the cheek bones.

Image showing mis-en-scene

This image from 1408. It represents the mise en scene of our horror film well through a range of light. This room is a little messy then what ours shall look like, but we are filming in a garage so it will be dirty damp and cold, all the key elements to a good horror film. The light coming from the crack in the wall is what our plan was, instead we are using the light and making it come from a whole near the side of the shed. The light is the key feature in this image and this is what we expect from ours.

Insert own image of mise-en-scene
This image taken from the garden which shows the mise-en-scene. The light is coming from behind the shed, just like the image from 1408 you can see the light is coming from a crack in the wall we wanted to create that but it was not possible so we thought this was a good idea. As we set at night there is a horror like feel as everything normally happens at night such as films like paranormal activity, amityville horror.

4 key images of exciting films
This is the opening titles for Paranormal Activity. The dark background  represent the darkness of the film. They also use red colouring in the titles which illustrates the danger in the film, also the fact the writing is blurred portrays the atmosphere created in the film.

This is an image from poltergeist, an idea that we could do, to create the light is the tv screen, which is show on this image. They use a child as children are shown as innocent so using a child has an effect on the audience.

This is a clip from paranormal activity, this shows the mise en scene. I have chosen this image as it shows that they use an ordinary setting yet mystery things happen. We are chosen a similar setting and creating a similar effect.

This is also an image from the film 'The Ring' which is off one of the characters. The image links to our film as the character becomes possessed. By showing the possession we are going to use make up and editing.  The girl also looks very evil and is shown by her staring directly into the camera which creates more fear. I think this is something that we could use in our film.

4 own images here

This image is very dark, but in the image you can see that there is just a dark character that is processing images in the dark room, but we put a white mask on the actor as i think it added a better effect, of the mystery and horror. As our genre was physiological it plays with the audience mind and make them ask questions such as "why is he processing the images"
This image is of the character seeing the light for the first time, this image shows the characters emotions as he is seeing that he is confused by the light. This is when the audience first sees the threat and the audience starts to wonder where it is coming from.

This is an image of the character going to see what the light is, this is where the music starts to build up. The long shot shows the mise-en-scene, but then the next shot is of when he is getting closer to the light.

This image shows the character when he has been possessed, we have put make up on him to define the cheek bones and then made him have the effect of baggy eyes, the actor has cleverly portraid him being possesed by rolling his eyes up so you can just see white. We was thinking of putting white contact lenses in but this works as well. The costume used is just plain so we have gone with black and white so that the focus is only on his face. This is where the audience looks first and grabs there attention.
